Review of Prince Charming, Reanimator (Dungeon Crawl Classics)

(I wish I could be more explicit in this review, but I really don't want to give away any spoilers. This module is just too good to risk ruining it for someone...)


In Prince Charming, Reanimator, by the prolific Daniel J. Bishop, we get a fantastic third party module for Dungeon Crawl Classics. The module begins with Sleeping Beauty lying in an enchanted castle; the cold Prince Hubert Charming has recruited village peasants to retrieve her. Danger, enchantment, comedy, and horror await PC's in this twisted take on classic fairy tales.


Prince Charming, Reanimator is a perfect 0-level funnel. I believe it would be a great way to introduce new players to Dungeon Crawl Classics. It has all the elements needed to make for an epic night of gaming, including fun and unique NPC's, monsters, and artifacts. Beneath the fairy tale surface, the module features a dark, creepy vibe that really takes it to the next level.


The drawings were well done, and the layout was fine, but the maps were only adequate. I'm being a bit picky here, but I feel that hand drawn maps would have added to the module's old school vibe. Of course, considering how easy it is to draw one's own version of the maps, this is not a big deal.

Also, some of the module descriptions are a bit long. When the game is in full swing, they can be difficult to parse for relevant information. Before running this module, I recommend judges spend time going through the module with a highlighter.


As usual, Daniel J. Bishop manages to hit all the sweet spots. Buy it, play it, and let it inspire you to make your own dark, weird, and creepy versions of classic fairy tales. Highly recommended!

Coming Soon, BXH-1000: In Search of Commander Kurtz

In a scenario reminiscent of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, PC’s are cold-blooded imperial thugs, sent up a jungle river to assassinate  Commander Kurtz. This open hack for B2 includes Introduction, Wilderness Hex Crawl, Scenario, Secrets, Allegiances, Quotes, Rumors, Fatal Flaws, Wandering Monsters, a Bestiary, and a B2 Conversion Chart.

Kurtz is a legendary warrior, renowned for his valor and cunning. For years, he served as Castellan of a Bloodfist Keep, an outpost on the infamous Penal Colony. But now he's gone rogue. The PC's are thugs, recruited by the Empire to stop Kurtz. They are expendable mercenaries, sent to clean up a mess. Their goal is simple: kill Kurtz by any means necessary. Should they fail, the PC's will be branded as traitors to the Empire, and bounties will be placed on them. On the other hand, if they succeed, the Imperial authorities will reward them with a new, even more deadly mission, a mission created for the sole purpose of killing them off.
